An Overview Of Nutrients

January 13, 2009 | By Monika Mundell | No Comments »

Nutrients are or should be part of our diet. Unfortunately many diets lack nutrients altogether and this has been one of the reasons to give health and wellness companies a run for the market. People buy vitamins and minerals like there is no tomorrow because they have been marketed to buy an aggressive campaign.

While there are instances where nutrients or supplements are needed to help us to a healthier body, I also believe that much of what we see is a result of hipped up advertising.

Most people don’t even know what nutrients are and to help them understand a little more I have collected some information on the subject.

A nutrient is food or chemicals. Organisms need nutrients to live and grow, meaning we need them as well. Organic nutrients (naturally occurring) in foods are fats, proteins, carbohydrates and vitamins. Inorganic nutrients can be considered as a nutrient and these are water, oxygen and minerals. Unless an organism can synthetically produce nutrients in their own bodies, nutrients become essential for them.

Those nutrients needed in larger quantities are also called macro-nutrients (chemical elements of human consumption such as carbon, nitrogen, hydrogen, oxygen, sulfur and phosphorus, whereas the ones hardly needed are called micro-nutrients (minerals, vitamins and elements).

Nutrients in our diet also contain substances that provide energy such as proteins, carbohydrates and fats and others that support our metabolism like water, vitamins and dietary minerals.

The saying you are what you eat couldn’t be more suitable. I notice myself that when my diet is adequate and balanced with the major nutrients my well-being is fantastic. On the other hand, if I indulge too much into junk food I feel lethargic and heavy.

Therefore I choose a healthy diet these days giving me ample energy and making me look radiant to boost.
