- 1886 – David H. McConnell started what was then called the California Perfume Company (CPC). He was only 28 years old. The company office a small 60sq meter room was established in New York. David’s first sales representative Mrs. P.F. Albee would later become a legend with Avon representatives around the world.
- 1928 – The first officially branded products of Avon hit the markets. A toothbrush, talcum and a vanity set.
- 1939 – Avon Products Inc. gets officially renamed from the original CPC.
- 1946 – Avon went public with shares traded over the counter
- 1954 – By this time Avon carries around 500 products in their line with annual sales of $ 55 million. This is also the start of their worldwide successful TV campaign that rings a bell with many “Avon calling”. Further to this Avon is expanding for the first time to international markets.
- 1964 – The success of Avon’s sales figures catapults the company into the NYSE.
- 1979 – By now there are 1 million sales reps involved with Avon. The company also buys famous jeweler “Tiffany’s”.
- 1986 – Avon JV’s with beauty company Liz Clairborne and buys further assets such as magazines and healthcare products.
- 1990 – The company’s CEO fights to protect Avon from a series of take over events, including Amway and Mary Kay. It officially states it is not for sale.
- 1997 – Avon’s annual sales top the $5 billion mark. Their reps cater to a record 650 million customer orders in 135 countries worldwide.
Since then, Avon has moved into the new boom of the Internet. With state of the art websites their representatives find it easy to keep up with present demand.
