Ban on Scratch and Win Contest Welcome

December 5, 2007 | By Monika Mundell | No Comments »

The recent ban about unethical scratch and win contests used by many direct selling companies in Malaysia has been commended by The Consumers Association of Sabah and Labuan (Cash).

President of Cash Datuk Patrick Sindu said that many unsuspecting victims had been cheated out of their hard earned cash. Sadly it happened but at least the situation has been rectified. The ban will prevent direct selling companies from cheating people in the future.

Unfortunately this does come too late for those who fell victim to these unsavory methods and one cannot believe that in today’s world this is still the going practice with so many direct selling companies.

We would think that since there is so much information available to us regarding scams that governments would put tougher bans and control into practice when these companies launch.

Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Minister Datuk Mohd Shafie Apdal said yesterday that the government banned these scratch and win contests because they seemingly created more damage than the supposed benefit for contenders.

Datuk Patrick Sindu  also proposed a government mechanism by which they start to take better control against illegal and shoddy practices in the industry.
