Herbalife’s China Operations Extended

July 22, 2008 | By Monika Mundell |

Direct selling old timer Herbalife received its first direct selling license for China in March last year. It was to be on very limited operational grounds and only for the cities Suzhou and Nanjing in the Jiangsu province.

Since China has very strict rules when it comes to running a direct selling company, many will never get permission to do business. This could be a huge loss as the market is massive. Whether it is viable or not is to be confirmed by those who are already ingrained into the Chinese direct selling market but i feel where there are people, there is hope.

It has been announced now that Herbalife can in fact expand and as a result they were granted five more licenses. This was granted by the Chinese Ministry of Commerce. This new license will allow Herbalife to do business in Beijing, Guangdong, Shandong, Zhejiang and Guizhou.

The new licenses are effective immediately, except Beijing, which will be activated after the company opens service outlets.

"We are honored to receive these additional licenses from the Chinese government," said Herbalife Chairman and CEO Michael O. Johnson. "We appreciate this opportunity to expand our business in this important marketplace."

The company also announced the opening of its store in Shanghai. This brings the total number of Herbalife retail stores in China to 91.
