India’s Direct Selling Industry is Stronger Than Ever

New Delhi: Direct selling in India is poised for a nice growth with new sectors such as education and insurance coming on board.

By the end of 2007, the industry in the country is all set to breach the Rs 3,150-crore mark.

With the recent boom in the economy the direct selling concept has still room to grow extensively in India. Direct selling is expected to touch the Rs 10,000-crore by 2012,” says P. Sanker, Chairman of the Indian Direct Selling Association (IDSA).

He also said, that proactive regulations from the Government would help the industry get more organized, attract legitimate players and protect consumer interests.

Employment Benefits

P.Sanker said that since the direct selling industry was an evolved concept in the West, that by replicating the model in India they could cut down on warehousing and distribution costs.

Some of the fastest growing sectors are in nutrition, kitchen and insurance, he said, adding that direct selling now reaches 2,600 towns and covers 50 major cities, including metros.

Lack of awareness is still a major hold up of the industry country wide. The IDSA is therefore trying to channel the industry more toward women.  It is suffice to say that the fundamentals will have to be in place, before major growth can happen.

The global direct selling industry is estimated at $105 billion and around 4,000 companies across the world are members of the World Federation of Direct Selling Association through its 53 affiliates like the IDSA in India.

This is certainly the scene and a very optimistic one since our firm has been getting requests from big multinational corporations for consulting them on setting up a direct selling channel for them .

We were surprised to see the reaction of these huge Indian companies when we quoted the initial investment including online real time software and compensation plan designing to be less than 15 lacs to initiate this venture .
We suggest the Indian direct selling association to take initiatives thru. PR campaigns to make the public aware of direct selling and the benefits of associating with ethical direct selling companies .
