Is The IDSA Going To Succeed At Regulating DS

July 14, 2008 | By Monika Mundell |

The IDSA (Indian Direct Selling Association) is seeking state legislation regulation for their sector. Currently the IDSA is governing 16 of the largest direct selling companies in the country.

With an expected increase of an additional 100% of revenue by 2012, more stringent regulations would have to be set in place. The industry is set to grow by one hundred per cent in the next five years, IDSA chairman David Stanley said.

At present there are more than 1.5 million direct sellers in the country. The gross industry turnover is Rs.2,522 crore, with an annual growth of about ten per cent. An additional turnover of Rs.1500 crore is contributed from the sale of insurance products.

It is about high time that the IDSA acts in the interest of all the Indians who seek to engage in direct selling. Regulations would prevent pyramid scam attacks with more force like in the case of Indian Quest Net.

The problem with lack of regulations is the fact that too many shoddy operators can open up shop and sting thousands out of their hard earned money.

At least with some control those pyramid scam operators can be more closely monitored and action can be taken much faster if reports of scams surface.
