Company Name: Longaberger

Website: www.longaberger.com

Longaberger History:

image Longaberger was founded in 1978 by David Longaberger who already had an existing business with high demand.

The basket company based on hand woven basket, exploded after it was launched as J.W.’s Handwoven Baskets in 1976 in Dresden Ohio.

The founder soon learned that the initial company success was due to home shows demonstrated by an experienced basket consultant which resulted into the birth of the Longaberger direct sales company.

Dave’s daughter Tami joined the company in 1984 after she graduated from the Ohio State University. Tami spent the next few years working her way around the company to become familiar with all aspects of the business.

She was appointed president of the company in 1994 and worked alongside David until his dead in 1999. The Longaberger company has gone from strength to strength and today they are America’s premier maker of hand crafted baskets. They also offer pottery, specialty foods, fabric accessories and wrought iron products.

The company strives to serve their customers with top quality products and are proud on their family style organization that welcomes new consultants and customers America wide.

They are based in Newark, Ohio. All in all it is estimated that around 45,000 independent home consultants sell Longaberger products directly to customers.

Longaberger Products:

Initially it all started with a demand for more hand woven baskets. But more than 30 years have passed since then and today Longaberger has a lot more to offer than baskets alone.

image Their baskets are beautifully crafted and of top quality. Their flagship product can be utilized for many uses all around the home and even on the road.

From a rucksack type basket one can carry on their back, to lovely baskets to stack your craft projects, you will find great baskets. The best part is, that they are very conservatively priced. Considering the quality of their product they are very much affordable for anybody.

Perhaps this is one reason why the company has been so successful in their market.

They also offer a range of handy household pottery that can be used in the kitchen, on travels and around the house. This involves things such as:

  • dinnerware                                     image
  • jugs
  • travel mugs
  • baking dishes
  • candle stands
  • bowls

Another part of Longaberger’s products are their wrought iron range. You will find beautiful cookbook holders, candle stands, napkin holders, wall racks, tables, plant shelf’s and lots more. Enough to excite the most fickle of collectors.

Longaberger Compensation Plan:

To sell Longaberger products directly to the consumer, you will have to sign up for their business opportunity and become an independent consultant. Consultants earn 25% commission on selling the products as well as commissions and discounts on Longaberger destinations.

Longaberger consultants also earn money and points when they sponsor a new person into their own business. These points can be traded against products for themselves or money.

Unfortunately there isn’t an actual marketing plan on the Longaberger opportunity page and to find out exactly what they pay and when, you’ll have to speak to a local Longaberger consultant.

This is something I see frequently when trying to explore MLM business opportunities on the Internet. I personally don’t like it when organizations aren’t translucent enough to see all there is to see upfront.

I’m not a big fan of having to talk to a pushy sales person (worst case scenario) to found out all the intricate details of this particular MLM. In my eyes, this is time wasted on my behalf (if I don’t like it) and the companies behalf (if the consultant doesn’t make a sale) and could easily be rectified by providing more upfront info online.

Regardless of my little rant, Longaberger seems a decent company and all you can do is find out for yourself.

The company is one of the top 30 MLM opportunities rated by Best MLM site in 2006. With a good track record and a great name in the industry they are still going strong.
