Company Name: Mary Kay Inc.

Website: www.MaryKay.com

Mary Kay History:

Mary Kay was founded on Friday, September 13,1963 by Mary Kay Ash. The company went public in 1968 and was being traded over the counter until in 1976 when the company was large enough to make it to the NYSE.

In 1985 Mary Kay Ash took the company private in a leveraged buyout. As a private company, Mary Kay doesn’t have to publicize all their earnings. She died in 2001 and since then her son Richard Rogers has taken over the company’s reigns as Chairman and CEO.

Mary Kay is a skin care and cosmetics MLM and is a widely known household brand these days.

image But it wasn’t always glory and success for Mary Kay Ash. In fact she launched her business with a big dream to empower women around the world from a small shabby office with used furniture in Dallas all these years ago.

Mary Kay’s 9 initial products have since extended into some 200 and growing.

Mary Kay’s Pink Cadillacs are well known around the world as a reward to their top producers with a pink car. These days the car actually varies between Mercedes, Beetle, Ford, Toyota, Volkswagen, Cadillac, Pontiac and more, depending in which country these top producers reside.

Back in 2005 the Mary Kay car fleet in the U.S.A. consisted of some 9,870 fleet.

Mary Kay Products:

Mary Kay’s products are a multitude of cosmetics, skin care, spa products, products for men and fragrance.

image From the initial eyeliner, mascara, lipstick, lip brush, blush and eye color, the company has also moved to offer suits to kit out their independent sales consultants and the now famous Cinderella gifts. Cinderella gifts epitomize the pinnacle of success and they come in form of vacations, jewelry, cars and other flashy rewards.

Besides all the lavish skin care Mary Kay offers they do feature a sun care collection that helps to protect the skin whilst outdoors. This is especially important these days as we need to increase our protection all the time. So seeing these MLM companies following suit is good.

All in all, Mary Kay’s products are an endless range of beauty styling that would be most attractive for women all around the world. If you are into cosmetics at all, then these products might delight you.

image Luckily the company hasn’t forgotten the males either. Nice to see, as more and more males are moving into the age where personal grooming matters to them as much as to women. They can choose between Men’s skin care, fragrances and sun care products to keep them looking handsome.

Mary Kay Compensation Plan:

Mary Kay has been accused in the past of being a pyramid scheme. There are still blogs and websites to this day who keep reporting such. In the end, when it comes to evaluating any MLM you need to use common sense and listen to your gut feeling.

Whenever we feature an MLM target="_blank" rel="nofollow" href="http://gobala.linktrackr.com/attractionmarketing-mlmrkeywords">MLM opportunity here, it is based on research and what we found in terms of information on the actual company website and other sites such as Wikipedia/ Mary Kay.

Several levels of inventory packages have been established for the new US based Beauty Consultant:

  • Pearl Star : US$4,800 Wholesale;
  • Emerald Star : US$3,600 Wholesale;
  • Diamond star : US$3,000 Wholesale;
  • Ruby Star : US$2,400 Wholesale;
  • Sapphire Star : US$1,800 Wholesale;
  • US $1,200 Wholesale;
  • US $600 Wholesale;

These packages are definitely on the upper scale of joining any MLM business and I can see that this might get some people into strive.

To get started with the company as an independent beauty consultant, one has to purchase the starter kit. According to the level a new consultant desires, they can choose the amount of which they want to spend.

According to Wikipedia’s Mary Kay page, the overall average of a new Mary Kay consultants inventory purchase was around $1,800 for the year of 2005. This figure directly compares with the sales data of consultants in the U.S.A for the same year. Which would implicate that the turnover of an average consultant is the same as the purchasing amount when they first start.

What is unclear about the company is their actual payment structure, as there isn’t any information to be had when visiting the corporate website. I really don’t like this as if I consider an MLM company, I don’t want to be sucked into a personal consultation first before I can find out what the real deal is.

In a February 2007 press release, Mary Kay (Canada) claimed the following for Canada in 2006:

Out of 34,272 independent Mary Kay Beauty Consultants:;

  • 2,422 earned more than $100 Canadian;
  • 362 Directors earned more $16,500 Canadian;
  • 16 National Directors earned more than $100,000 Canadian;

For Mary Kay (USA) Nationals, the 2006 median gross income (prior to business expenses) is $75,443. These figures clearly indicate, that there are only a handful of top consultants who are earning top dollars with the company. Maybe this is one reason why exactly the compensation plan is missing from the corporate website?
